Advice On Being A Freelancer

Personal Branding
As a freelancer, you’re essentially marketing yourself, so it’s important to maintain a professional image. Shiftbee allows you to gather ratings and reviews from past clients, and Shiftbee will keep track of your attendance. By consistently showing up for your removal gigs and earning positive feedback, you'll increase your chances of being hired again—both by previous clients and new ones.

Financial Responsibilities
Your hourly rate should account for expenses such as holiday pay, pension contributions, and business-related costs (e.g., travel, parking, and meals). After completing a gig, invoicing will be handled for you.

Tax Responsibilities
As a freelancer, you’re responsible for handling your own taxes, including Income Tax, National Insurance Contributions, and possibly VAT. We assist all freelancers with free advice about how to manage your responsibilities.

Record Keeping
Freelancers are legally required to keep administrative records for at least 22 months after the tax year in which they were filed. This includes invoices and receipts, which can be organised manually or using apps designed for bookkeeping.

Insurance
Unlike traditional employees, freelancers are not covered by an employer’s insurance policy. We don’t require you to have insurance but we do recommend taking out insurance to cover you against accident and injury whilst at work.

Communication
Once you're matched with a gig, all communication happens directly between you and the client. Keeping clear and professional communication can leave a positive impression, increasing the likelihood of receiving a high rating.
